Some thoughts and Samsung U900 Soul review

Samsung U900 Soul handset is probably the most promoted mobile phone during Mobile World congress in Barcelona. There are huge, building sized posters all around the city and the number of handsets on display is incredible – you actually don’t have to wait in line to check one out.

So what is the fuss all about? To tell you the truth, I’m not sure.

It’s not that Samsung Soul has some groundbreaking new technology, the interactive touchpad was around since Samsung E950, 5 megapixel camera (no zoom) is becoming standard in the new higher end Samsung phones. Slim body, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity, radio with RDS … duh

Maybe, it’s because in U900 Soul, finally all these technologies really come together at the right price point, for Samsung to expect to have a major mass seller on it’s hands? Something like LG had with their Chocolate and Shine lines?

Samsung rarely bothers naming it’s handsets and usually just slaps the model number on it’s phones (Samsung Armani and BlackJack excepted). The branding with the “Soul” name and announced major marketing campaign suggests, that with Soul U900, Samsung may indeed be taking it’s cues from LG.

Here’s some live pictures of Samsung Soul:

And here’s the video demo done by Samsung rep.:

Overall, Samsung Soul U900 is a solid, good looking handset with somewhat unusual, but interesting and easy to use navigation pad.

And, if the price is righ and the marketing push works, Samsung may indeed have a bestseller on it’s hands.

Smart all rounder, video not up to much…some fiddly navigation. The guy in the video should learn to at least script the sell and do some homework on the basic functionality of his product, especially if attending flagship mobile meetings!

this phone is appalling…so complicated and slow to do anything, scrolling through pictures is a tedious business and my screen has failed already after 3 months, when someone rings, it forgets to light up the display meaning there is no way of knowing who is phoning without answering it…the only way to get the screen back on after this is to turn the phone off and back on again!

I just experienced the same problem and my phone's not even a month old:-( What did you do about it?? I called the shop and they said that they would send it to be repaired, but that means that I have to wait 2-3 weeks…It's probably some software error that can be dealt with easily, so I'm not ready to give it up without a fight…
