AT&T still exclusive carrier in US for iPhone 3G
Now that Apple’s iPhone 3G is officially out, the question on everyone’s mind is, “Will it be unlocked?” The short answer: No. The long answer: No, keep dreaming.
iPhone 3G, according to Apple’s official announcement, will be available starting from $199 USD. That puts it in a price point that’s lower than the iPod Touch, and it’s cheaper still than the 8GB iPod Nano Video. The catch is, as there’s always one, it will come with an exclusive 2-year contract with AT&T. You saw that coming, didn’t you?

So if you want to get a hold of the 3G iPhone when it comes out on July 11th, expect to pony up $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. An unlimited data plan is also available as a separate purchase, but the prices seem reasonable enough.
An unlimited data plan for iPhone 3G customers will cost you $30/month while the 3G data plans for business users are up at $45/month.
Even so, the price of the new 3G iPhone is very affordable, given that it packs some of the most advanced features you can find in mobile phones nowadays. But Apple is also expected to release a pre-paid and unlocked version of the iPhone 3G later this year, which would seem best for those who don’t feel up for a 2-year contract with AT&T.
