RIM sued by Mformation for… stealing software?
RIM may be doing great lately, with its Bold and Storm and all, but there’s someone that says the Canadian company shouldn’t be that happy.
Mformation Technologies Inc., an “innovator in mobile device management software” based in Edison, New Jersey, today sued Research in Motion Limited and its US subsidiary, Research In Motion Corporation, for patent infringement.
Apparently, RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones are using management software that leverages on some systems and methods invented by Mformation and covered by the US patents Nos. 6,970,917 and 7,343,408.
Mformation says that it first wanted to strike a licensing deal with RIM regarding its methods. After the methods were disclosed to RIM, the Canadian company refused to license software from Mformation. Even so, Mformation states that RIM has modified the software used in BlackBerry phones as to include said methods and systems.
So, according to the New Jersey company, now BlackBerry handsets have remote management software that doesn’t belong to RIM and neither is licensed from its maker.
If this is true, it’s for the U.S. Court for the Northern District of California to decide, as Mformation has filed the suit against RIM there.
