It’s taken a very long time coming, but the surest and safest iPhone 3G unlock is assuredly on the way, scheduled for a worldwide release on December 31st, 2008.
But indeed, nothing beats a true, swift, and merciless iPhone 3G unlock that can be done all via software, without the need to fiddle with the fragile SIM tray, or other iPhone parts that otherwise should not be messed with.
Well, the day of the iPhone 3G soft unlock’s arrival is near, as the iPhone dev team is closely working on it. Such dedication! Their target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008, but they warn that it is only available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, which would be the case for your iPhone had you not messed with jailbreaking software such as QuickPWN.
The iPhone dev team also addresses the issues with DFU mode that I talked about earlier, which started manifesting in Macs after the Mac OS X 10.5.6 software update was released. Thankfully, there are workarounds, and the dev team mentions them too.
What’s the point of unlocking? Why, being able to use the iPhone 3G with other networks, silly! And that’s what matters most. See you ’round New Year’s Eve, then.
