Cloaking device to eliminate cellphone static and render objects invisible closer to reality
Scientists working on cloaking technology for cellphones have created a new kind of light-bending material that brings them one step closer to their goals. Which is, create a cloaking device that could hide objects from plain sight.
One of the scientists who worked on the study published in the journal Science, David Smith of Duke University in North Carolina, says that “Cloaking technology could be used to make obstacles that impede communications signals ‘disappear.’”
The cloaking technology that is being developed here comprises of a so-called metamaterial, which is a unique, engineered substance with properties not seen in nature. When placed between two wireless devices, such as cellphones, it can block the devices from intercepting each other’s wireless signals and therefore interference (i.e. static) will cease to exist.
This kind of technology first and foremost applies to military scenarios, but if it’s good enough we’ll be able to see it in real world applications once it’s ready.
