Microsoft and Verizon talking about iPhone rival… Yawn…
Wall Street Journal reports that “Microsoft is in discussions with Verizon Wireless to launch a touch-screen multimedia cellphone early next year, in a bid to compete with Apple’s iPhone” .
The new phone project, codenamed “Pink”, should produce the phone that will extend Windows Mobile OS with new software capabilities and will have an integrated Windows Marketplace app store.
The actual phone will be produced by a third party, though Microsoft is closely involved in both software and hardware design process
…… Yawn….
Well, more or less.
I am inclined to agree that there might be such a thing as a project Pink that Microsoft is developing exclusively for Verizon. It will extend Windows Mobile OS, will have new software capabilities, integrated Windows Marketplace and what not. It will be announced early next year…
And the new extended OS will be called Window Mobile 7. It will most likely be made by HTC (or, maybe, Samsung). And it will be announced on February 15th of 2010.
But it will be just another high end (aka HTC Touch Diamond or Samsung Omnia) touchscreen phone with soaped up features like WVGA display, HD Video playback and 5 or 8 mpx camera.
And everything that Microsoft is able to get into WinMo 7 OS – better (probably capacitive) touch and improved overall UI experience, tight integration with My Phone, Live and Zune services (including backup, online sharing, messaging, maps, music, video and app marketplace), most likely rolled under a single umbrella.
Probably exclusive to Verizon.
So what? Everyone who matters in mobile world is moving in the same direction and will have something similar to offer next year.
