BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Bold 9650 and BlackBerry Pearl 3G will get OS 6

While officially announcing the BlackBerry Torch 9800 for AT&T, RIM has also unveiled more details on BlackBerry OS 6.

The Canadian company has confirmed that OS 6 works with both touchscreen and non-touchscreen smartphones, and it even said it plans to bring it to some older BlackBerries starting “the months ahead.”

BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the BlackBerry Pearl 3G will all be updated to BlackBerry OS 6 – in some markets, at least, because the update process is “subject to carrier certifications.”

Naturally, all new BlackBerry smartphones that are coming out in the near future, including the Storm 3, the 9670 and the Curve 3G 9300, will have OS 6 on-board. The rumored BlackBerry tablet is likely also on the list.

Some of the highlights of the new OS:

  • Revamped users interface
  • Customizable homescreen
  • Universal Search tool
  • New and fast WebKit-based browser
  • “Visually-rich, context-sensitive Action Menus”
  • New Social Feeds application
  • New Text Messages application
  • New Podcasts application
