Sony Ericsson LiveView “micro display” Android accessory announced (video)

Instead of announcing a new Android phone (because it doesn’t have too many), Sony Ericsson has just unveiled a Bluetooth accessory for Android, called LiveView.

LiveView is a 1.3 inch “micro display” that can remote control your Android smartphone, as long as this runs Android 2.0 or higher.

Ironically, all Sony Ericsson Android handsets currently run version 1.6 – however, by the time LiveView hits the market (sometime in the fourth quarter of this year), they will be updated to v 2.1.

When paired (via Bluetooth) with a compatible phone, the Sony Ericsson LiveView will let you see incoming calls, read messages, feeds, Facebook and Twitter updates and so on. You can even control the phone’s music features, see calendar events, and access apps.

To help users find apps for LiveView, Sony Ericsson will launch a LiveWare Manager application – this scans Android Market for LiveView-enabled apps and presents them to you.

For your convenience, LiveView can be “attached in a watch strap, on a keychain or clipped to a laptop.”

Sony Ericsson didn’t say how much LiveView costs, but it did mention it will be included in “Sony Ericsson Experience Packs” starting Q4 (for those who don’t want to buy the micro display alone).
