iPad 3 and iPhone 5 to have IGZO panels from Sharp?

Apple’s latest mobile devices, the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2, both use IPS displays, because the company considered that IPS was the best technology for them. But things may change next year. According to DigiTimes and unnamed sources in Apple’s supply chain, the Cupertino giant intends to use IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) panels for its next generation mobile devices, starting with the new iPad – most likely called iPad 3. The IGZO panels should be made for Apple by Sharp. IGZO is a technology that enables displays to provide improved light transmittance at high pixel densities, while consuming less energy than IPS panels – so it seems to be a perfect choice for that rumored QXGA (2048 x 1536 pixels) screen that the iPad 3 should come with. Another report from DigiTimes has it that the new iPad would use a huge 14,000 mAh battery (instead of the 6,900 mAh one featured by the iPad 2). As for the iPhone 5 (or whatever its final name will be), apart from possibly having an IGZO display, it could come with a completely new design – unlike the iPhone 4S, which is basically an iPhone 4 with new internals. Of course, none of these details can be confirmed for...

Nokia Lumia 900 (Ace) renders leaked with AT&T branding

It was only yesterday when we found out that the oft-rumored Nokia Ace would be announced by AT&T during CES in January, and would be in stores in March. This supposed Windows Phone-powered flagship smartphone from the Finnish manufacturer has now been spotted in some leaked renders. They come courtesy of one of Microsoft’s partners, who sent out some Christmas cards. Nothing special there, but these cards were depicting Nokia’s next smartphone. As you can see, the design is very similar to that of the already available Lumia 800. But it’s not identical, so this is clearly a different device. First of all, it has a front-facing camera. Second, it features prominent AT&T branding. That of course lines up nicely with what we heard yesterday. And the phone will probably end up being called Nokia Lumia 900. This has been rumored a couple of times already, and after all it makes sense (considering Nokia’s current Windows Phone naming scheme, which so far has the upper-midrange Lumia 800 and the lower-midrange Lumia 710). So the handset you see in the pictures above probably is the Nokia Lumia 900, on its way to AT&T in the US. That said, it will probably also arrive in other parts of the world because Nokia badly needs a global flagship smartphone for 2012 – this may just be it. Via...

LG to announce Intel Medfield-powered Android smartphone at CES 2012

LG is reportedly getting ready to announce the world’s first Android smartphone that uses an Intel chip. According to Korea Times, which quotes Intel Korea chief Lee Hee-sung, the smartphone will be unveiled by Intel president Paul Otellini at CES 2012 (10 – 13 January), and should hit the market “in March at the earliest.” This is in line with a report on Intel’s mobile plans from May. The features and design of the upcoming handset remain a mystery for now, but we should expect the device to use Intel’s new Medfield mobile processor, and run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. If you remember, LG and Intel have tried to launch a smartphone before, in early 2010: it was the MeeGo-based LG GW990, which had a 4.8 inch display with 1024 x 480 pixels. The GW990 was canceled, so it never reached end users. Let’s wait and see if the new Android device...

Motorola’s Droid Xyboards now $50 cheaper at Verizon

Available at Verizon since earlier this month, the Motorola Droid Xyboard 8.2 and Droid Xyboard 10.1 were launched at prices starting at $429.99, and going up to $729.99. Now Verizon seems to have realized that those prices were too high (especially since they all require a new 2-yr contract agreement). So it decided to offer each of the Xyboard models (8.2 16GB, 8.2 32GB, 10.1 16GB, 10.1 32GB, and 10.1 64GB) for $50 less. You can go here at Verizon to choose any of the Xyboards right away. Both the Motorola Xyboard 8.2 and Xyboard 10.1 feature dual-core processors, and run Android 3.2 Honeycomb (but will most probably be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich next year). Via The...

Motorola RAZR gets a software update in Europe

Those of you who are in Europe and own a Motorola RAZR should be happy to know that a software update is on its way to your devices (if it hasn’t arrived already). This isn’t going to make your RAZR run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but it does bring with it many enhancements, and as such we recommend you apply it as soon as possible. The update is obviously going to reach your RAZR over-the-air. So your phone should just notify you when it’s available (if it hasn’t done so already). Then you can install it without using a computer. After applying the update, your phone will be on software version 651.73.30. The update will be out in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. Additionally, SFR customers in France and T-Mobile customers in Germany are also going to receive it. It improves camera performance, adds a new Smart Rule trigger (‘motion detection’), comes with new security features, improves call performance, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and makes localisations better. The update also comes with the Evernote app preinstalled. Full details about the update are available here at Motorola. Via Android...

Quad-core Acer Iconia Tab A700 Android tablet shows up in photos, should debut at CES 2012

That rumored Acer Iconia Tab A700 tablet has been finally spotted in some photos, allowing us to see that it doesn’t look too different from the already announced Iconia Tab A200. Unlike the A200, though, the A700 has a camera on the back (5MP with flash), a quad-core processor (Nvidia Tegra 3), and a 10.1 inch display with a higher resolution: 1920 x 1200 pixels (WUXGA). Other features: 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3.5mm headset jack, Dolby Mobile sound, MicroUSB, Micro HDMI, front-facing camera, and a 9,800 mAh battery. Acer should officially announce the Iconia Tab A700 at CES 2012 (10 – 13 January). Since the A200 comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the A700 will most likely run ICS, too. Amazon Kindle Fire still selling very well

Amazon Kindle Fire still selling very well

A couple of weeks ago, we told you that Amazon had sold at least 2 million Kindle Fire Android tablets. Now the company has announced that it sold “well over 1 million Kindle devices per week” throughout December (hence in 4 weeks), and that the Kindle Fire “is the #1 best-selling, most gifted, and most wished for product across the millions of items available on Amazon.com since its introduction 13 weeks ago.” Of course, a good chunk of the “well over 1 million” devices sold each week this month is represented by Kindle Touch and regular Kindle units. But since the Kindle Fire tops Amazon.com’s best seller charts, the tablet has probably reached 3 million units sold – or maybe 4, or 5 million units, we can’t know for sure unless Amazon publishes specific sales figures. Regardless of how many millions of units of it have been sold, one thing is clear: the Kindle Fire (which costs only $199) seems to be the most successful Android tablet ever – even though it’s not a pure Android tablet. Pantech Android tablet with LTE to be launched by AT&T next year

Pantech and AT&T have been good friends throughout the years, with the Korean company launching more than a dozen phones and smartphones via the second largest US mobile carrier. Now it looks like Pantech is readying its fist tablet for AT&T. According to JKN (website in Korean), the tablet has an 8 inch display and LTE connectivity, and should be out early next year – most probably with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board. It’s quite possible that the upcoming tablet is the Pantech P4100, approved by the FCC earlier this month (and sketched below). The P4100 features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, HDMI, MicroSD card slot, a camera on the back and, of course, a SIM card slot. The new Pantech LTE tablet for AT&T could be announced at CES 2012. We’ll obviously let you know if this happens. JKN also reports that the LG Optimus Pad LTE (which still hasn’t been announced) will be out in the US next year, too. Via...

UK: LG E906 Jil Sander Mobile with Windows Phone Mango now just £149.99, 50% off the launch price

If you’re in the market for a Windows Phone in the UK and are looking for a great deal, here’s something for you. LG’s first, last, and only smartphone to launch running Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango), the E906 (also known as Jil Sander Mobile) can now be yours for half the price it had when it was launched last month. It’s not often that you see a phone’s price drop by that much in so little time, so I guess it’s safe to assume that this particular handset isn’t selling very well. But that shouldn’t stop you from purchasing one, especially now that it’s become dirt cheap. But how cheap, you ask? £149.99. SIM-free and unlocked. Again, this same device was going for £299.99 in November. Sure, it may not be the highest-end offering out there. It’s not even an entirely new phone per se, as it’s just basically a rehashed Optimus 7. But at this price, it may have the best price per features ratio of any Windows Phone. The LG E906 Jil Sander Mobile has a 3.8-inch 480×800 touchscreen, a 1 GHz processor, a 5 MP autofocus camera, 16 GB of built-in storage, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, a 3.5 mm headset jack, and a preinstalled Jil Sander app. To get one, just head over to...
