Motorola Droid 3 shows off its redesigned keyboard

The yet-to-be-announced Motorola Droid 3 has appeared in a new set of leaked photos, this time allowing us to take a look at its sliding QWERTY keyboard.

Unlike the Droid 2, which has a 4-row keyboard, the new Droid 3 features a 5-row one, which seems to be the best keyboard a Droid has ever had.

We still don’t know much about the Droid 3, but the smartphone looks quite thin, appears to have a front-facing camera, and will likely run Android 2.3 at launch.

Verizon will probably announce the Moto Droid 3 soon, although we can’t say just how soon. Let’s hope it will happen this spring.

*sigh* – I’ll admit the keyboard looks better than the joke which Motorola placed on the original Droid, and the membrane-style keypad on the Droid 2… but I hope they got this one right, with nice positive-feeling keys you can actually type with. I’ve tried every touchscreen smart phone out there, and they all SUCK to use if you need to type out more than a text message or a tweet, and have less than a minute to do it in.
The fastest keypad by far I’ve ever used was on the old BlackBerry Curve I had – the buttons were tiny, yes – but also very raised, separated, and with a positive “click”. The entire keyboard was compact – but that made it easy to whip out an email at light-speed with just two thumbs. I’ve found that having the keypad spaced across the entire width of these newer slider-style phones like the Droid, actually slows down the speed at which I can type.
Whatever – we’ll see how this new Droid 3 performs when it comes out. I’ll buy it if I can stand it.
