AT&T Inspire 4G and Atrix 4G receive HSUPA via OTA update

If you are an owner of the Atrix 4G or Inspire 4G, you will be excited to hear that you will no longer be suffering from horrible connection speeds.

AT&T is now issuing the update to both phones after some preliminary testing was done. The update will bring ”increased potential data speed” to both handsets.  The Inspire 4G’s patch will also ”make the email set up process much easier.” The Atrix will receive multiple updates which will bring improved battery life, better bluetooth compatibility, better fingerprint reader performance, and the Atrix display will turn off while connected to a wall charger. All of these features and several other minor tweaks will be fixed along with improved 4G speeds.

Users will not be able to update their devices if they are not connected to a Wi-Fi network. If you have either of these phones, let us know how the update went and how the new speeds are.

No way I will be among the first to allow a Motorola device to update. I learned from an update which crippled my Droid X for months last year. Even replacements rebooted often until I discovered the auto rotate feature was causing the problem.

I am glad to hear that the update will not download without wifi. I will keep my wifi off so that the phone does not start begging me to install every hour- being able to snooze THAT reminder INDEFINITELY is one of my most desired Android features.

Even with the 4G capability I expect that the Atrix will continue to have no signal in most stores that I frequent and will still drop calls on me at a rate of once or twice an hour on the highway in metro Detroit. How I wish I lived in an area that had better ATT coverage. Somehow the metro area around America’s eighth most populous city didn’t make it :(

I haven’t been able to obtain the update yet. I tried doing it manually, but I continue to receive a message that my phone is up to date. Additionally, AT&T’s customer service called me in response to an inquiry I previously made and told me that they had no idea whent the update was coming out. When I pointed out the support page on the AT&T website to the customer service rep, she still didn’t change her line. She even followed up with an email telling me that they had no idea when the update will be available. :(

I ran a speedtest 3 times before updating and got an average 2.08Mbps down, 0.083Mbps up, and 250ms ping. I’m in minneapolis, so there are tons of people on the towers I use here, so a little crowded (9:30am on wednesday – so people are working with their phones). The only increase I got from updating (ran the after test 4 times) was the upload speed drastically increased. After the update I averaged 2.445Mbps down, 0.567Mbps up and the ping about the same 328ms (the pings were 147, 139, 885, 141) so the middle big one brought up the average.
