Microsoft Windows Phone Mango officially announced, brings IE 9, Groups, Threads and more
The newest iteration of Windows Phone 7, namely Windows Phone Mango, has been officially announced by Microsoft. As expected, WP Mango includes more than 500 new features, although not all of them have been unveiled today.
Available starting “this fall”, Windows Phone Mango will reportedly “push the boundaries of the smartphone experience around communications, apps and the Internet.”
Here’s a list of some important new features found in WP Mango:
- Internet Explorer 9 with full hardware acceleration and support for HTML5
- “Intelligent” multitasking, letting users easily switch between applications, and allowing apps to run in the background
- Groups – contacts can be now grouped into personalized Live Tiles
- Threads, letting you “switch between text, Facebook chat and Windows Live Messenger within the same conversation.”
- Hands-free messaging – voice-to-text and text-to-voice support
- Deeper social network integration, including enhanced support for Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook
- Improved Bing search
- App Connect – applications are connected to search results, allowing them “to be surfaced when and where they make sense”
- Local Scout, bringing hyperlocal search results
- Linked email inbox
Current Windows Phone 7 users will be able to upgrade their devices to Mango for free. Until Mango is released – sometime this fall, as mentioned before – here’s a video preview of it (we don’t know what company made the handset seen here. It may be just a reference design device anyway):
All the initial Windows Phone 7 hardware partners will launch new phones with Mango, including 4G phones. There are also three new hardware partners: Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE. More on WP Mango will be unveiled in the coming weeks and months.
