UK: LG Optimus 3D launches a week early in select stores
The LG Optimus 3D’s availability saga is about to come to an end, at least in the UK. The oft-delayed 3D-capable Android-powered smartphone is on its way to general availability in the UK on July 7. However, if you’re itching to get one and can’t wait that long, there is another option.
It turns out that select Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy stores will have Optimus 3D handsets in stock starting on July 1, so almost a week earlier. There are caveats, however. First of all, these devices will only be available in some actual physical stores. So no ordering online and getting the Optimus 3D prior to July 7. Also, the list of stores that will sell you the Optimus 3D starting this Friday is quite small.
You’ll have to shell out no less than £499.95 if you want to get the Optimus 3D SIM-free and unlocked. Alternatively, you can get it for free if you agree to 24-month contracts starting at £35 per month. That’s a bit much to pay just for 3D-related bragging rights, but to each his or her own. Also keep in mind that the Optimus 3D will be running year-old software (Android 2.2 Froyo) when it comes out. Yes, an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread is promised, but why the phone isn’t launching with that on board is unclear (since the 2.3 version of the OS has been out for six months already).
