Sprint Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.3 Gingerbread update may be out this month

The Samsung Epic 4G is Sprint’s very own version of the Samsung Galaxy S, the Android smartphone that was last year’s main attraction. When it launched, the Epic 4G was running Android 2.1, as all of its Galaxy S siblings did. Since then, it’s been updated to Android 2.2 Froyo, and now it looks like it’s set to receive yet another OS version bump.

Sprintfeed has heard from a reliable source that the long awaited update to Gingerbread will start rolling out to the Epic 4G before the end of this month. That’s great news for Epic 4G owners, and it would make this handset one of the best supported (in terms of major software updates) ever in the Android world.

There isn’t a clear release date to speak of for the update, at least not yet, but the signs seem to be pointing to the end of the month – after July 24, to be precise. And regardless of whether it will come on July 25 or July 31, we’re sure that Epic 4G owners will appreciate this update.

The reason why it hasn’t come even sooner apparently is Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, the proprietary layer it adds to its Android phones. If we were to guess, we’d say that porting the latest version of TouchWiz is what took the longest time, probably a lot more than actually getting the Android Gingerbread bits to work with the Epic 4G. But such is the price we have to pay for the phone manufacturers’ obsession with differentiation through software overlays. Just look at HTC’s recent troubles with getting its Sense UI onto the original Desire.

    Man this is why companies should not bother with putting skins on their android phones, because when update time rolls around, it’s the customer that suffers.

    Just keep pressing the volume down button on the side of the phone until the screen says Silence All. Push volume up to restore ringers.

    Touchwiz should already be done for 2.3 (SGS2 and i9000 GB) If the person who is informing you is saying that its UI I call BS cause Touchwiz 3 & 4 are done for 2.2 & 2.3, so that is surely is not the issue
