Vodafone Australia Samsung Galaxy S II gets a software update to improve Web browsing
The Samsung Galaxy S II hasn’t been available from Vodafone Australia for too long, yet it’s already seeing its first software update. As of now, Samsung Galaxy S II devices sold by Vodafone Australia are the only ones to get this update. That may change in the future, but at this point we don’t know that it will.
The update apparently has just one reason for existence: improving the Web browsing experience on Samsung’s flagship smartphone of 2011. It’s unclear exactly what the update fixes or changes, but do expect Web browsing using the integrated browser (at least) to become faster and smoother.
You can apply the update either by using an over-the-air mechanism, or by using Kies, Samsung’s desktop software, to perform the update aided by a computer. If you want to use Kies, full installation instructions are provided in this PDF.
If, however, you’d like to update directly on your device, make sure you have both a Google account as well as a Samsung account (Settings > Accounts and Sync). You’ll need to be connected to the Internet, either via Wi-Fi or via Vodafone 3G (downloading is free on Vodafone’s network), and your Galaxy S II will need to be sufficiently charged (read:not about to run out of juice).
To force the phone to look for the update, go to Settings > About phone > Software update > Check for update. Since the rollout is staggered, at this point your specific handset may tell you that the update is available (in which case you should obviously choose to install it), or that it isn’t. If it isn’t, you’ll just have to be patient. The update is on its way and will certainly reach your device soon.
