Verizon Motorola Droid 2 Android Gingerbread update now rolling out, Milestone 2 will get it in Q4
If your device of choice still is the Motorola Droid 2, we have some good news for you. If, on the other hand, you’re rocking a Milestone 2, well… you weren’t expecting timely OS updates anyway, now were you? Hopefully you’d seen Moto’s track record in that regard outside the US and bought the Milestone 2 for any other reason.
The Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Droid 2 has started rolling out today. The update will come over-the-air and the rollout will presumably happen in stages, so it’s not certain that you’ll receive the notification today. If you can’t stand waiting, you can manually check for the update’s availability for your particular device by going to Settings > About Phone > System Updates. Make sure your phone is charged before attempting to update.
On its Facebook page, Motorola has announced that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Motorola Milestone 2 will be available sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. That means no Gingerbread for you Milestone 2 owners this month. Why it’s taking this much longer when the Milestone 2 is basically the Droid 2 with a different radio chip is, of course, beyond us. As are all of Motorola’s Android update release time frames outside the USA. By the time the Milestone 2 gets Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich may be already out.
We’re hoping that Google’s purchase of Motorola will have a positive impact on such things in the future, but for now don’t hold your breath.
While the Droid 2 isn’t available for purchase, you can get the Droid 2 Global on Amazon.
