Nokia 5800 and 5530 get new features via software update

Here’s some good news if you own one of two older Symbian^1 devices. The Nokia 5800 and 5530 did not and will not get updated to Symbian Anna (or Belle for that matter), so the situation for these phones can look kind of bleak. Yet it isn’t entirely so, for Nokia has been working on porting some of the aspects of the Anna update to Symbian^1. And they’ve now finally made it to the 5800 and 5530.

It’s now been almost three years since the Nokia 5800 started shipping, and it’s great to see Nokia still support this device. Granted, it was probably its best-selling touchscreen phone before the N8, but three years is a lot in the mobile world and the manufacturer could have just chosen to forget about the 5800.

But it didn’t. Therefore software version 60.0.003 is now rolling out for the 5800. The software version on its way to the 5530 is 40.0.003, but these are essentially identical in functionality, so we’ll only mention the changes they bring once.

Both phones will now have the Symbian Anna browser (version 7.3.1.33), Nokia Maps 3.06, support for international domain names, support for non-ASCII characters such as Arabic or Chinese, and a better overall browsing experience.

As usual, it may take a while for the updates to become available in your region, and that’s especially true if your phone came carrier-branded. Like all Nokia updates, these will reach your phone over-the-air, and you don’t need to use a computer to install them if you don’t want to.
