Samsung may just update the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich after all
If you own a Samsung Galaxy S or Galaxy Tab, this was not a great Christmas for you. That’s because last week Samsung announced that those two devices would not be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Even if neither is older than 18 months.
The culprit? Why, the ‘customizations’ of course. Namely, Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, which together with the new 4.0 bits would apparently need more than the 512 MB of RAM found in both these devices in order to run properly.
That’s why, for example, the Samsung Nexus S, which has basically identical hardware, can run ICS, and those two can’t. Naturally, despite Samsung’s attempts to bury this announcement by making it two days before Christmas, people got upset.
After all, a lot of you would rather have an ICS update sans TouchWiz than no update at all. So lo and behold, Samsung is now apparently considering ways of bringing Android 4.0 to the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab after all.
Don’t get too excited though, since we’re still at the ‘having internal discussions’ phase. Basically, they’re brainstorming, trying to come up with a way to fit all that TouchWiz bloat into 512 MB of RAM.
Samsung has once again let us know how difficult that is, so it remains to be seen if the backlash was powerful enough for it to get to work and come up with actual solutions.
That said, it’s still worth appreciating that mere days after the initial announcement, the company is at least willing to reconsider its stance on the matter, and thanks only to ‘consumer demand’. Well done, Internet.
