Samsung Galaxy S III may arrive in April with HD screen, 12 MP camera, Android 4.0, great battery life
The Mobile World Congress will be held in Barcelona at the end of next month. That’s almost certainly when and where Samsung will officially announce the Galaxy S III, its flagship smartphone for this year. So far, we’ve heard a few rumblings about this device here and there, but interestingly it hasn’t been leaked nearly as much as some competing smartphones, although we may have gotten the first image/render picturing it (which you can see below) a week ago.
But now that MWC is fast approaching, we’re beginning to see more and more info make it into the open. Today, for example, famous Russian journalist Eldar Murtazin gave us loads of hints about the Galaxy S III’s specs via Twitter. While there isn’t one tweet that says it all, and he barely mentions the fact that he’s speaking about the Galaxy S III, the fact is pretty obvious.
So, according to Mr. Murtazin, the Samsung Galaxy S III will be in stores in April (and will indeed be unveiled at MWC). It will come with:
- an HD (non-3D) touchscreen – not surprising, considering that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus already has one. We’re also guessing it might be a Super AMOLED Plus unit as opposed to the ‘plain’ pentile-matrix Super AMOLED in the Galaxy Nexus. As for the lack of 3D, perhaps Samsung realized that this simply isn’t needed in a flagship device just yet
- a 12 MP camera – it’s about time that a global smartphone maker other than Nokia and HTC puts out a phone with a camera that has more than 8 MP (although Samsung’s cameras have lately been a lot closer in terms of quality to Nokia’s than HTC’s have been, so we’re more excited about the Galaxy S III in this regard than the HTC Titan II for example)
- Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – all we can say is many people would be upset if it didn’t ship with the latest version of the OS (and Samsung probably knows that)
- either a 1.5 GHz or 1.6 GHz quad-core processor or a dual-core unit – this is where it gets a bit murky, since Murtazin claims there are both dual-core and quad-core prototypes of the Galaxy S III being developed and tested. For now it’s unclear which CPU will make it into the final product – that will probably be established after testing
- enhanced battery life – he doesn’t say if this comes from a huge battery or better power management, but there are strong hints at the latter (though we still hope there will be a bigger battery in there too)
- unnamed software tweaks – well, we’re expecting a new version of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI overlay to be found on the device, although this may be something else. Unfortunately we can’t know for sure just yet, especially as Murtazin didn’t go into much detail
And that’s about it. Of course you should take all of this with a grain of salt. But whether these allegations are true or not we’re going to find out for sure pretty soon – in just over a month. So stay tuned.
