MWC 2012: Hands-on with the Huawei Ascend G300, a new affordable Android smartphone
Sure, the Ascend D quad/D quad XL and D1 stole the show yesterday, and we’ll probably be talking about these devices for a long time to come. But those aren’t the only new smartphones that Huawei brought to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
One intriguing device is the Ascend G300, part of the company’s new ‘Gold’ line. Like some of its competitors, Huawei decided to segment its smartphone offerings in a few different lineups. These are the Ascend Y (where Y stands for Young – these presumably will be the cheapest, entry-level handsets), Ascend G (where G stands for Gold, this is one step up from the Y), Ascend P (P is for Platinum, the Ascend P1 and P1s already being launched, the latter as the world’s slimmest smartphone), and finally the Ascend D (where D is Diamond – this is supposed to contain the absolute cream of the crop spec-wise, and the D quad and D1 sure fit nicely in that category).
The Ascend G300 then isn’t going to win any awards for specs alone, but it manages to pair decent innards with a very nice design and a metal back cover. So this isn’t your average cheapo Android – it’s got a bit of style in fact.
Yet the price, we’ve been assured countless times by a Huawei rep, will be something to smile about. No exact details were given, but based on specs alone this shouldn’t cost more than €200-250 (unsubsidized) if Huawei wants it to be a success, sales-wise.
While the Ascend D series are the aspirational models, this G300 should help Huawei with sales volumes. It’s got a 5 MP camera, a 4-inch 480×800 touchscreen, dual-microphones for better audio quality, DTS sound, as well as the usual connectivity options and a yet-unspecified processor. It unfortunately runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread at the moment (although most budget Androids announced recently do too), but an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is promised and will hopefully arrive soon.
Which is also when the Ascend G300 should be on the market. We’ll let you know when we find out more. In the meantime, here’s a short demo video showcasing the Huawei Ascend G300:
