New Apple iPad to be welcomed by Virgin Mobile Canada with new LTE network
Just like Rogers, Bell and Telus, Virgin Mobile Canada is getting ready for Apple’s new LTE-enabled iPad, which should be released on March 16. However, unlike the three big Canadian carriers, Virgin doesn’t offer LTE services. But it will.
According to a document uncovered by Mobile Syrup, Virgin Canada will launch its LTE network “just in time for the new iPad” – this should mean next week.
Reportedly, Virgin Mobile’s LTE coverage will reach 6 million customers “in 14 urban centers across Canada.” The specific areas aren’t disclosed. However, since Virgin uses Telus’ network, it can only offer LTE services in some the markets the big carrier does (hence Belleville, Calgary, Cambridge, Edmonton, Guelph, Halifax, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Montréal, Ottawa, Québec City, Toronto, Yellowknife, and Vancouver).
The new iPad was officially announced by Apple a couple of days ago. In addition to LTE connectivity, the tablet features iOS 5.1, a 9.7 inch Retina Display with 2048 x 1536 pixels (the highest ever found on a tablet), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, 5MP iSight rear camera with 1080p video recording, VGA front-facing camera, and an A5X dual-core processor with quad-core graphics.
Apple is already taking pre-orders for the new iPad, both in the US (where prices start at $499), and in Canada (where the lowest price – for the 16GB Wi-Fi-only version – is $519).
