Xiaomi sells 150,000 MIUI Android smartphones in 13 minutes

The Chinese company Xiaomi has managed to sell 150,000 of its Android smartphones in 12 minutes and 41 seconds earlier today.

The Xiaomi Phone, also known as the Mi One or the M1, is an affordable device that runs the well known MIUI third-party Android user interface. The Mi One was announced last August, and it still packs quite a punch for the low price of 1,999 yuan (that’s approximately $317 or €241 at today’s exchange rates). It comes with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, an 8 MP autofocus camera, and a 1,930 mAh battery.

For some reason, the company has chosen to sell its smartphone in batches, which are being released once in a while. Today at 10 AM, ordering for the 7th batch was given a green light. The batch consisted of little over 150,000 units, and they were sold out in less than 13 minutes. The news comes straight from Xiaomi, via a Chinese microblogging platform.

Those who managed to get their orders in this morning will receive their phones in 1-3 weeks. Ordering went very smoothly this time, with no website hiccups or downtime, unlike what happened with some of these batch sales in the past.

Whether the limited number of units in each batch has something to do with it, or simply the attraction towards a rather cheap but very capable Android device (and one that ships with a unique UI), the Xiaomi Phone is certainly a success. Too bad it’s only available in China.
