Amazon’s Kindle Fire 2 could be announced on July 31
If there’s one other tablet currently approaching the levels of hype seen by Apple’s iPads and Google’s upcoming Nexus 7, it has to be whatever the next iteration of Amazon’s Kindle Fire turns out to be. Prospectively named by rumor-mongerers Kindle Fire 2, it has had claimed release time frames in June, Q3, or even the second half of this year.
And today we add another would-be launch date for Amazon’s new tablet: July 31. That’s according to some of CNET‘s sources. Keep in mind that we’re talking about the date for the unveiling event here, not an actual shipping date.
Still, that would make this a tablet-filled summer. After Microsoft’s Surface and Google’s Nexus 7 that will probably get shown tomorrow, the new Kindle Fire would be the third ‘big’ unveiling of a slate in less than two months.
According to the aforementioned source, the new Kindle tablet will have a camera as well as physical volume controls. Additional sources have pointed out that Amazon may be going for an Apple-like product upgrade style, where the price remains the same between different generations of a device, but the newer models get improved specs. So while that higher-res screen hasn’t been confirmed, it very well could make it in the Kindle Fire 2.
If Amazon unveils this tablet in July, it’s pretty clear that it will be targeting the back-to-school shopping spree in the US, and not the holiday season like the original Kindle Fire did last year. Yet with Google’s rumored Nexus 7 tablet being a solid competitor (and probably identically priced too), the Kindle Fire 2 will have to work hard to remain a viable tablet proposition for the future.
