Huawei Ascend Y 200T gets certified on its way to China Mobile, will bring ICS to the masses
By Vlad Bobleanta on 10 Jul 12Huawei is busy prepping a new smartphone tailor-made for China Mobile and its TD-SCDMA 3G network. The Ascend Y 200T (model number T8620) will undoubtedly be one of Huawei’s cheapest smartphones ever when it launches.
That’s because the Ascend Y line will be comprised of Huawei’s most affordable devices, according to what the company has told us during MWC in February. And this Ascend Y 200T is the first member of the series that we’ve seen so far.
The smartphone just passed its certification by the relevant Chinese authorities, so it should arrive on the market pretty soon. The Ascend Y 200T has a 3.5-inch 320×480 touchscreen, a single-core 1 GHz MediaTek processor, a 3.2 MP camera, 512 MB of RAM, 1 GB of built-in storage space, all the usual connectivity options, and a 1,250 mAh battery. Surprisingly or not, it’s going to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich from day one, unlike any other entry-level Android phone thus far.
In fact, this will create an interesting situation for Huawei. Its lowest-end smartphone will be on ICS, while the Ascend G300, which is a lower-midrange offering, is still stuck on Gingerbread for the time being.
Anyway, we certainly hope that Huawei will make a version of the Ascend Y 200T available outside China. The aforementioned Ascend G300 is already very cheap (about £100 in the UK), so the Ascend Y should be even cheaper than that. But with very decent specs for that price level, and with ICS on board, it may be Huawei’s next best seller.
