Zuckerberg denies Facebook phone’s existence
The incredibly often rumored ‘Facebook phone’ or ‘Facebook smartphone’ isn’t going to happen. At least according to the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
Yesterday we brought you the latest rumor on the matter, claiming that HTC will manufacture the Facebook device and that it will launch next year. Well, during Facebook’s quarterly earnings call, Zuckerberg had this to say:
“Building out a whole phone really wouldn’t make much sense for us to do.”
So that settles it, then. Or does it? This can be interpreted as “Facebook isn’t going into the hardware manufacturing business”. But it could still provide the software for such a device. Or, at the least, help HTC launch another batch of Facebook-friendly smartphones such as the Salsa and ChaCha from yesteryear – perhaps with more Facebook sprinkled throughout the UI.
As for the rumors saying that Facebook hired ex-Apple employees to work on the phone, well, those people could just be working on improving Facebook’s existing mobile apps.
Looks like the (in)famous Facebook phone is still vaporware for now. But we’ll keep you posted.
