Samsung has become the first company to officially announce a Windows Phone 8 device: it introduced the Samsung ATIV S earlier today in Berlin (after unveiling the Galaxy Note II with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean).
The ATIV S is what we’ve previously known as the Samsung Odyssey. It features a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED HD display, HSPA+ 42Mbps (850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz), NFC, A-GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera with 1080p video recording and LED flash, 1.9MP front-facing camera, 16GB / 32GB of internal memory, MicroSD card support, and a 2,300 mAh battery. It measures 137.2 x 70.5 x 8.7 mm, weighs 135 grams, and looks like this:
While Samsung didn’t say when the ATIV S will be released, it’s most likely going to happen in the next few months. Until then, the South Korean company will showcase the WP8 handset at IFA 2012 in Berlin, between August 31 and September 5.
Samsung has announced a Windows RT tablet, too. It’s called Samsung ATIV Tab, and features: a 10.1 inch display with 1366 x 768 pixels, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, S-GPS, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, Internet Explorer 10, 5MP rear camera with 720p video recording, 1.9MP front-facing camera, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB / 64GB of internal memory, and MicroSD card support. The tablet weighs 570 grams, measures 265.8 x 168.1 x 8.9 mm, and comes with an 8,200 mAh battery. Details on pricing and availability haven’t been announced.
ATIV will be the brand of Samsung’s future Windows devices, including Windows 8 devices (like the 11.6 inch ATIV Smart PC & Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro that were unveiled at the same time with the ATIV S smartphone and the Ativ Tab).
