AUO announces 4.46″ display with 1 mm bezel and 4.97″ Full HD 443 ppi panel
Move over, LG and Sharp! AU Optronics (AUO) has a 5-inch Full HD display too! The Taiwanese maker has announced three new screens for the mobile world, and each one has a feature that makes it stand out from the crowd.
First, there’s a 4.46-inch 720p HD unit (seen in a reference design smartphone below) which has the world’s narrowest bezel requirement at just 1 mm. Also in are ultra-wide viewing angles.
Next up, the aforementioned 5-inch unit (4.97″, to be absolutely precise). Like the ones made by LG and Sharp, its resolution is 1920×1080. AUO uses the same low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) process to manufacture this screen and the 4.46-inch one.
Finally, it looks like Samsung isn’t the only manufacturer churning out 10-inch 2,560×1,600 touchscreens (such as the one used in the upcoming Nexus 10 tablet). Or maybe Samsung isn’t making that display after all, despite what some rumors claimed. Anyway, AUO just announced its very own 10.1-inch 2,560×1,600 IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) unit that’s just 1.5 mm thin.
There’s no telling when these panels will be inside a smartphone or tablet near you, but one thing is certain: more and more mobile displays will be very high-res and will have smaller and smaller bezels. The trend is clear.
