Samsung Galaxy S IV caught on camera for the first time? It will be present at CES
The picture you can see below could be showing the Samsung Galaxy S IV for the first time ever. Or it could just be a bit of wishful thinking from a Samsung fan – so a fake. It certainly looks sketchy enough, so you’ll have to decide for yourself whether or not this is believable.
That aside, it would be rather refreshing to see Samsung finally switch to on-screen software rendered Android navigation buttons, seeing as how it’s been one of the last holdouts on the matter. The lack of the physical Home button may even help the Galaxy S IV dodge some infringement claims from Apple.
Assuming this image is real, and this is what the Samsung Galaxy S IV looks like, we can see that the narrow bezel trend has made it to South Korea as well – which is wonderful, considering that this should sport a 4.99″ Super AMOLED touchscreen. At that screen size, every millimeter of width wasted on bezels makes the phone harder to hold.
It’s also good to see that the funky way in which the Galaxy S III’s corners are rounded was scrapped in favor of something more humane. Regardless of what you think about how heavily rounded corners look on a smartphone, do consider that they’re also of much help in comfortably holding such a huge device too.
The Galaxy S IV is going to be present at CES in Las Vegas next week, but that doesn’t mean Samsung is already going to officially announce it. That would make no sense whatsoever, as the Galaxy S III is still selling very well ans Samsung’s main competitors haven’t even launched their next-gen devices yet. No, the Galaxy S IV will be in Nevada so that Lee Jae Yong, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman, could show it to some carrier executives. This obviously makes perfect sense, since the next Galaxy S has clearly been in development for many months now, and perhaps the carriers need to be reassured that a new high-end product is coming from Samsung soon to compete with the myriad of 5-inch 1080p Full HD smartphones / phablets that have been announced recently, especially by Chinese vendors.
Finally in today’s Galaxy S IV rumor/leak roundup we have the supposed ‘information’ that it will be announced in May. This originated on Facebook, where the Korean company’s arm in Lebanon posted that as an answer to someone’s question. Soon after the blogosphere exploded with anticipation and boombastic titles (“Samsung Galaxy S IV launch date revealed” and that sort of thing), Samsung Lebanon explained that “What we said is only trivial since all Galaxy S series are released between late April and Early May, yet there’s no way for anyone to know the exact release date”.
So no officially confirmed anything then. Not yet, at least. Of course the most plausible scenario at this point would be for Samsung to hold a special press conference in which to unveil the next Galaxy S sometime in April or May – making it almost one year after the predecessor’s announcement. But since nothing is actually known about this, anything is possible. So let’s wait and see what happens.
