Huawei Ascend G615 gets announced in Germany with 4.5″ HD screen, quad-core CPU. Priced at €299
Huawei has officially presented a new smartphone in Germany, the Ascend G615. Behind that uninspiring name hide some pretty awesome features though.
The Ascend G615 comes with a quad-core 1.4 GHz processor (a HiSilicon K3V2 made for Huawei), a 4.5-inch 720p HD IPS touchscreen, 1 GB of RAM, an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash and 1080p Full HD video recording support, a 1.3 MP front-facing camera, 21 Mbps HSPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 8 GB of built-in storage space expandable via microSD, and a 2,150 mAh battery.
Its dimensions are 134×67.5×10.5 mm, and it weighs 145g. It runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. An update to Android Jelly Bean is scheduled for March.
And that’s really the biggest shortcoming of this device – the software. The update may come in March, but nothing suggests it won’t be version 4.1 – which isn’t the latest version of Android anymore. So if you care about these things, the Huawei Ascend G615 clearly isn’t the phone for you.
But it may be perfect for many people, considering that it will cost just €299. Sure, it can’t compete with the 5-inch 1080p-screened phablets which are coming, but it’s still a high-end handset that will retail for midrange smartphone pricing. That’s really something.
The Ascend G615 will be available from the beginning of February in Germany at just three retailers: Amazon, Conrad, and Cyberport. It will spread to all possible outlets sometime in March. No word yet on availability in other countries, but we’re hoping the G615 will eventually make its way to more parts of Europe. It’s good to finally see Huawei delivering some of that affordable quad-core action outside of China too.
