Pantech Vega No.6 arrives in Korea in February with 5.9″ 1080p screen, quad-core CPU

Pantech is the third Korean phone maker, and while it heavily trails Samsung and LG across the world, it’s closer in terms of sales numbers in its home market. Over the past couple of years, Pantech has launched a myriad of high-end smartphones over there, and a few affordable devices in the US.

The high-end trend is set to continue in South Korea, though, with the Pantech Vega No.6. Meant to succeed the Vega No.5 from 2011 in the company’s portfolio, this will be a 5.9-inch phablet with Full HD 1080p resolution. The Vega No.5 came with the world’s first dual-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, and the new Vega No.6 claims the title of the world’s first Full HD device in the “six-inch class”.

Of course, 5-inch Full HD smartphones are becoming more popular by the day, but Pantech’s is indeed the first one to come with a near-6-inch display with such a resolution. In fact, interestingly it’s also the first Full HD smartphone to be announced by a Korean company.

The Vega No.6 will become available in South Korea on February 28. It will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor (APQ8064), a 13 MP rear camera, LTE support (including VoLTE for high quality voice calls over LTE), 2 GB of RAM, and it will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The Pantech Vega No.6 will feature extremely narrow bezels so that it will be as easy to hold in one hand as possible, although how much that can be true for a 5.9-inch device remains to be seen. Apparently, Pantech has also customized Android a bit by adding its own UI that is also supposed to help with one-hand operation. We can’t tell you how exactly, but let’s not forget Samsung’s ‘narrow’ keyboard for the Galaxy Notes – this may enhance on that idea.

    That’s 13.06cm × 7.35cm, which is not that ridiculous – if the bezels really are narrow.
