ZTE V987 goes on sale in China as a cheaper Grand S. Quad-core, 5″ screen, bigger battery, $273
If you like the design of the ZTE Grand S, but consider its price to be rather insane, then the same company has something for you. It’s uninspiringly called the ZTE V987, but it packs some great specs and has a low price – so what more could you ask for?
The ZTE V987 has a quad-core 1.2 GHz MediaTek MT6589 processor, a 5-inch 720p HD touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 1 MP front-facing camera, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of built-in storage, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and a 2,500 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Its dimensions are 141x70x9.2 mm, and it weighs 160 grams.
The V987 is a dual-mode device, which can operate both on a CDMA network and on a GSM-based network at the same time.
Interestingly, its battery is a lot bigger than the unit fitted into the much more expensive Grand S. So the V987 should last you a whole day of medium use without an issue, unlike its flagship sibling.
The ZTE V987 is already available in China, and it retails for 1,699 yuan. At the current exchange rates, that’s around $273 or €202. It’s almost three times cheaper than the Grand S, incredibly. Of course the display is lower-res and the MediaTek processor won’t compete in benchmarks with the Qualcomm unit in the Grand S, but in terms of sheer value for money the V987 looks like a great phone.
