Xperia Z compared to HTC Butterfly, benchmarks give credit to Sony’s handset
Expected to be launched in Europe and Asia starting late February / early March, the Sony Xperia Z is certainly a handset you have to check out if you’re in the market for new high-end Android smartphones.
Until it reaches the market, though, you might want to see it pitted against the competition. Well, ePrice Taiwan has managed to test the new Sony handset alongside the HTC Butterfly – known in the US as the HTC Droid DNA (and sold exclusively by Verizon Wireless).
The Xperia Z and the Butterfly have a lot in common: Android Jelly Bean, 5 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080, 441 ppi) displays, quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processors, Adreno 320 GPUs, and 2GB of RAM. They’re almost the same size, although Sony’s device is thinner (7.9mm vs. 9.1 mm).
ePrice can’t say if the Butterfly is better than the Xperia Z, or otherwise. Both have their advantages, and disadvantages. For example, the display of the Xperia shows colors a bit oversaturated, and the general feeling is that photos and videos look a bit more natural on the Butterfly.
The Butterfly also seems to outperform the Xperia Z when it comes to sound clarity. On the other hand, Sony’s handset excels in low-lighting photography, and performs slightly better than the Butterfly in most benchmark tests (including Quadrant, NenaMark, and Google’s Octane).

Of course, the great advantage the Xperia Z has (not just over the HTC Butterfly) is that it’s dust-proof and waterproof. At the moment, it is the world’s only 1080p handset to have these attributes. So that may count when an undecided buyer finally makes his or her choice.
Later this month, HTC will officially announce its second 1080p handset – the M7. It remains to be seen how the Xperia Z fares when compared to this new smartphone.
