In Japan, carrier Emobile has announced a new Huawei device, the adorably named GL07S. Obviously this won’t ever make it to any other market except Japan, for that’s the normal state of things over there. But this is very interesting to us from another point of view. See, the GL07S may be based on the Ascend P2 that Huawei should be officially unveiling for the whole world to see at MWC.
The specs of the GL07S line up very well with what has been rumored so far about the Ascend P2, even if in the design department some visible alterations were made. No, the GL07S doesn’t look exactly like the Ascend P2, but that’s clearly by design – there needed to be some differentiation for the Japanese market. One more thing to note is that the Ascend P2 is probably going to have on-screen software rendered Android navigation buttons, while the GL07S features a capacitive key layout under the display.
The Huawei GL07S comes with a 4.7-inch 720p HD touchscreen, which is exactly the size and resolution that the Ascend P2 should have, according to the latest information from just a few hours ago. The Japanese smartphone also has a quad-core HiSilicon K3V2 processor made for Huawei and clocked at 1.5 GHz, a 13 MP Sony-made Exmor rear camera with 1080p Full HD video recording, a 1.3 MP front camera, 1 GB of RAM, 32 GB of non-expandable storage space, LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 2,350 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
It weighs 122 grams, and its dimensions are 137x67x8.6 mm. Which is a lot thicker than we heard the Ascend P2 might be. Then again, we may face a similar situation to what happened last year, when Huawei announced two versions of the Ascend P1, differentiated only by slimness and battery capacity (lower in the Ascend P1 S, the thinner model). Remember, the Huawei Ascend P2 should be less than 6.45 mm thin, so it can take the title of “world’s slimmest smartphone” from the recently announced Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra. So either Emobile simply didn’t care for such things, or we’re once again going to have two Ascend P models on our hands.
Whatever the case, we’re bound to find out soon enough. So stick around and we’ll let you know the instant the Ascend P2 gets official.
The Emobile GL07S by Huawei should become available in Japan on March 7.
