Huawei Ascend P2 is finally official with 4.7″ 720p screen, 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU, 13 MP camera

OK, the wait is over. Mobile World Congress is upon us, and although it hasn’t officially started yet (that will happen tomorrow), companies left and right are starting to announce things. Take Huawei, for example. For the second year in a row it held its press conference on the Sunday before MWC. Last year it showed us the Ascend D quad.

This year the Chinese company officially introduced the Ascend P2, a smartphone that has been leaking like crazy recently. This isn’t going to be Huawei’s top device though, for that honor still goes to the Ascend D2 which was unveiled last month at CES.

The Huawei Ascend P2 has a 4.7-inch 720p HD ‘infinity edge’ IPS touchscreen, a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, a 13 MP BSI camera with HDR support and a dedicated camera key on the side, a 1.3 MP front camera, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, all the usual connectivity options (including NFC), 150 Mbps LTE Cat.4, and a 2,420 mAh battery. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Huawei’s Emotion UI 1.5 overlay. The touchscreen has ‘enhanced responsiveness’, which means you’ll be able to use it with gloves on.

The phone is 8.4 mm thin, which is nice, but a bit disappointing – considering that we were expecting it to be around 2 mm thinner than that going by past rumors. So it looks like the Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra will keep its “world’s slimmest smartphone” title just a little bit longer after all.

The Ascend P2 is basically going to be Huawei’s upper-midrange smartphone proposal for this year. Unfortunately though, it’s still a long way out. The handset is expected to become available in the second quarter of the year, so between April and June. The only more specific time frame we heard was June for France, where it will be sold by Orange. So we can probably assume that it will make its way elsewhere around then too. That means more than three months (and maybe even four) will pass in between the announcement and release, something that could negatively impact the potential for this device to sell well.

In Europe, the Ascend P2 will be priced at €399 without contract and SIM lock. That’s about $526 at the current exchange rate, in case you were wondering.
