Caterpillar, Inc., also known as Cat, is a company primarily making construction and mining machinery. But now it felt the urge to dabble a little bit into smartphone making. And fitting its usual business, the device it announced today has ruggedness as its main feature.
It’s understandable that Cat would push the B15 to its customers of machinery of all sorts, since those are exactly the people who need extremely rugged handsets, given the work environment.
The Cat B15 delivers IP67 level ruggedness, being able to withstand drops from up to 1.8 meters without issue. It can also be submerged in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
And it looks rugged too. Otherwise, though, this is a pretty uninspiring smartphone, so don’t expect earth shattering specs. It has a 4-inch 480×800 Gorilla Glass touchscreen, a 5 MP rear camera, a VGA front camera, a 1 GHz dual-core MediaTek MT6577 processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, microSD card support, and it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Its dimensions are 125×69.5×14.95 mm and it weighs 170 grams.
So this is no high-end device, that’s for sure. At least its CPU is dual-core, and it runs a not-yet-ancient version of Android, even if it isn’t the latest (don’t expect any updates though). On the other hand, 512 MB of RAM isn’t all that much in this day and age.
Regardless of its smartphoney specs, the Cat B15 will probably be picked up for its looks and ruggedness above all else. Expect it to become available sometime next month for €329 unlocked and SIM-free.
