HTC Tiara: First Windows Phone 8 GDR2 Handset

HTC plans to continue manufacturing Windows Phone-powered handsets, CNET reported earlier, despite the fact that the company recently killed off the Zenith, a planned WP8 flagship. Instead, we’ve learned, the Taiwanese OEM will next offer a more modestly-spec’ed Windows Phone known internally as the HTC Tiara. Most notable about Tiara is the fact that it will be among the first devices to run Windows Phone 8 GDR2, which will be the second update to the platform since it debuted last fall. It will not, however, adopt the same design language as the newly-revealed, Jelly Bean-powered HTC One.

Besides the choice of OS, Tiara looks, on paper, to be nearly the doppelganger of a recently-released Android handset from HTC, the One SV (codename: K2). Both devices feature the same 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, a 4.3-inch Super LCD2 of WVGA resolution and 217ppi, 1GB/8GB RAM/ROM, an 1800mAh battery, and dual front and rear cameras. In fact, the only difference between the two models lies in the camera resolution: while both phones sport a 1.6-megapixel front-facing webcam, the Tiara’s eight-megapixel rear cam bests the One SV’s five-megapixel primary shooter, at least in terms of pixel count.

Look for Tiara, which should slot into HTC’s WP8 range between the 8S and 8X (8T, 8U, 8V, or 8W, perhaps?), to hit retail sometime mid-May.
