7-inch Microsoft Surface tablet coming this year
A 7-inch Surface tablet is coming from Microsoft this year. Whether or not it will be co-branded Xbox, like one rumor claimed back in November of last year, remains to be seen though. The smaller tablet will be part of Microsoft’s next generation of Surface products.
Which means that not only is the Redmond company not bothered by the less than stellar sales of its first batch of Surfaces, but it wants to bring a new form factor to the market hoping it will make this line more successful. Because that really did work so well for the bigger models, we assume.
Anyway, it’s a well known fact that Microsoft has a lot of cash so how exactly it chooses to spend its money should probably only concern its shareholders. We’re all for more competition in the tablet space, and the small tablet market is growing at a great pace, what with all the nice launches in this area – just think Nexus 7 and iPad Mini.
The 7″ Surface will go into production “later this year”, some “people familiar with the company’s plans” told the WSJ. Apparently the small tablet was not part of Microsoft’s plans last year, but the aforementioned Google Nexus 7 and iPad Mini (and, we might add, their sales numbers) managed to change the company’s mind. Which only means Microsoft has remained true to its ‘Apple copier’ mantra discovered a few years ago. When Apple goes small tablet, it’s fine – Microsoft suddenly wants in too. Before that, it wasn’t interested in the segment (echoing what Apple execs kept saying).
Apparently Microsoft is also continuing to test an own-brand smartphone, but currently it’s unclear whether that will ever see the light of day.
