Pantech IM-A870 to sport a “bezel-less” 5″ touchscreen
One of the latest trends in the smartphone world is for manufacturers to call their newest devices ‘bezel-less’ – or something similar. The attempts to create screens with smaller and smaller bezels have certainly helped alleviate the tendency for handsets to pack bigger and bigger displays, but ‘bezel-less’? That we haven’t really seen yet, despite companies’ claims. And it remains to be seen whether a true ‘bezel-less’ phone wouldn’t be harder to operate than one with bezels, but incredibly small ones. Since we’re talking about touchscreens here, if the display truly has no side bezels, then wouldn’t you trigger some touches just by holding it (especially if it’s large)? Sure, software could make up for that (a la the iPad Mini), but why complicate things?
We might find out what a bezel-less device looks like sooner than previously thought. That’s because Pantech is apparently hard at work on a bezel-less 5″ smartphone. The Pantech IM-A870 will be part of the Vega R series (and thankfully should get a more recognizable name by the time it launches). It will come with the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset, and a 5-inch bezel-less touchscreen, according to a report from ETNews.
The phone will be Pantech’s ‘response’ to Samsung’s Galaxy S4. Pantech is South Korea’s third biggest smartphone maker.
The Pantech IM-A870 will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and it could be out as early as the end of this month. Which is also when we’ll know how much Pantech was exaggerating when using the famed ‘bezel-less’ description for this phone.
