iPhone 5 and Sony Xperia Z are top sellers in Japan

While Samsung is the world’s largest smartphone maker at the moment, it doesn’t seem to be too successful in Japan. Of course, the Japanese smarthpone market is a bit weirder than the rest, and that’s because local vendors – Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Fujitsu, NEC – are all quite popular there.

According to the latest report from BCN, Apple’s iPhone 5 16GB offered via Softbank, and the iPhone 5 16GB available through KDDI were the two best-selling smartphones in Japan in the week April 15 – April 21. Sony’s waterproof Xperia Z (pictured below) completed the top three. Next came the iPhone 32GB (Softbank), Panasonic P-01E, Sony Xperia Acro HD, Sharp AQUOS PHONE EX SH-04E, ZTE 101Z, iPhone 5 32GB (KDDI au), and HTC‘s J Butterfly.

Sony-Xperia-Z-top Japan

Things will almost certainly be different this month – now that Samsung has unleashed its new Android Jelly Bean-based Galaxy S4 (this should be released by NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest mobile carrier). However, it remains to be seen if the S4 manages to take the very top position. It could certainly do that – after all, the iPhone 5 is seven months old now, and DoCoMo does not sell any iPhones, so it may promote the Galaxy S4 as its newest flagship handset.
