Xiaomi Red Rice in the works with 4.7″ HD screen, $130 price. Images leaked
In terms of affordable smartphones, Xiaomi’s already got the MI2A on the market, launched exactly one month ago alongside the new version of its flagship device. But it turns out the $240 MI2A isn’t cheap enough for Xiaomi. So the Chinese phone maker with a cult-like following is working on another handset that will be even cheaper.
Interestingly enough, this will come with the biggest screen ever seen on a Xiaomi phone – a 4.7-inch panel. For now, it’s called Xiaomi Red Rice, although keep in mind that this might be just a codename. There’s also a chance it will launch bearing this moniker, though.
So the Red Rice is going to be the biggest Xiaomi ever, and also the cheapest. But this is somewhat of a continuation of what the Chinese company did with the MI2S and MI2A. The former is the high-end device, but the latter has the bigger screen (4.5″ compared to 4.3″). And now we get the Red Rice, which will be even cheaper, and thus even bigger. There’s some logic in that, we assume.
The Xiaomi Red Rice’s display will sport 720p HD resolution, which is excellent for a low-end offering. It will also have a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage space, a 2 MP front camera, dual-SIM dual-standby support, and a 2,000 mAh battery. The rear camera could be an 8 MP unit like the one in the MI2A. The Red Rice will run MIUI v5, a highly skinned version of Android.
The Red Rice will probably be available in or around October, which is also when we should see the MI3 become reality.
The best and most important thing about the Xiaomi Red Rice is clearly going to be its price. At 799 yuan, it will offer incredible value for the cost. Wondering how much 799 yuan is? $130 or €100. With no contracts, no subsidies, nothing like that. Just let that sink in for a moment.
