The Huawei Ascend W1 is now available in the United States, courtesy of Walmart and its wireless arm Straight Talk. The Windows Phone 8 device is in stock and can be yours for $229.99. That price will net you a phone that isn’t tied to a two-year contract, but you will need to use Straight Talk’s services. The compatible plans are unlimited and start at $45 per month.
For more details, and to order an Ascend W1 for yourself, you can head over to Walmart right now.
The Ascend W1 was announced by Huawei in January during CES after many months of leaks and rumors about it. It’s definitely not a high-end device, as the Chinese company wanted to capitalize on Windows Phone 8 by bringing it to an extremely affordable handset. Which the W1 is.
So far though its rollout across the world has been incredibly slow-moving, and it’s still only available in a handful of countries. That may change in the future. As for getting released by any of the big (or even medium-sized) carriers in the US, don’t get your hopes up. If for some reason you really must have this particular device, you’re going to have to get it from Walmart.
