THL’s Monkey King flagship comes with 13 megapixel camera on the back… and in the front
When the smartphone you make is just another specc’ed out full touchscreen black slab running some version of Android OS, how do you differentiate from competition? Especially when there are tens of competitors producing essentially the same device, as they have in China.
One way to stand out could be the price of the device, and some Chinese smartphones are extremely cheap. Then you can try to compete on price, quality and branding based on artificial scarcity, like Xiaomi does. You can also go traditional branding/marketing route, like Oppo, Lenovo and Huawei.
Or you can trick out some feature beyond any rhyme or reason, and tout your phone as the “-est” of something. Current competition between Huawei and Umeox for who’s smartphone is the thinnest is a good example of that.
And even better, extreme case is the rush to have the biggest resolution front camera sensor.
And now, the old Chinese hand – ThL, is ready to come out with their Monkey King flagship , that will have both back and front 13 megapixel cameras.
The crazy thing is that 13 megapixel sensors are the new technology. They are expensive and the supply volumes are pretty low. That’s why Samsung is saving 13mpx cameras only for its flagships. And derivatives like Galaxy S4 active get 8 megapixel shooters.
Which means that ThL could have procured only a very small amount of 13mpx sensors, and expects to sell few Monkey Kings. Which will be more expensive than otherwise comparably specc’ed smartphones from competition. Or ThL will sell its flagship at a loss.
And all of this for the bragging rights for a completely useless feature.
Oh well… You gotta do what you gotta do to stand out, right?
