iPhone 5C might be what Apple’s upcoming affordable model will be called
After many months of rumors and leaks on the matter, some more believable than others, it does seem pretty clear that Apple is going to release two new iPhones in the near future: the 5S that will be the successor to the currently selling iPhone 5, and another, more affordable model that will have a plastic / polycarbonate casing. We’ve been hearing about this cheaper iPhone for a long time, yet not once has a name been mentioned. Until today, that is.
Apparently, it’s going to be called iPhone 5C. So for the latter part of this year, Apple will have two phones on offer: the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. This, of course, is based on the assumption that the leaked image you can see below is indeed showcasing the box in which the affordable iPhones will be packaged.
According to the person who posted this photograph over at WeiPhone, the box is around 7-8 cm thick. And as you can see, it looks similar to the iPod touch packaging.
The big question though is what the ‘C’ stands for, isn’t it? Some speculate that it can stand for ‘color’, since the iPhone 5C is supposedly going to be offered in a myriad of color versions, more so than any other iPhone before it. Of course, the ‘C’ in there could just stand for ‘cheap’. But don’t assume that you’ll be able to buy this for $199 unlocked or anything like that. ‘Cheap’, in this case simply means ‘cheaper than the other iPhone’ – that is, the iPhone 5S.
