Microsoft’s and AT&T’s Nokia Lumia 1020 ads both concentrate on just one thing: the camera. Sales are reportedly modest
Recently launched by AT&T in the US – and available only there for the moment – the Nokia Lumia 1020 seems to be the best Windows Phone 8 handset ever made. That’s thanks in no small part to the impressive 41MP PureView camera that will allow you to take photos at a quality unseen until now (on a smartphone). Video recording is likely also the best you’ll ever get on a handset.
So it kind of makes sense for both Microsoft and AT&T to release Lumia 1020 ads that only talk about its camera and the “reinvented zoom” it’s bringing along.

Despite the great camera, it does not look like initial Lumia 1020 sales are something Nokia can brag about.
Reps we spoke with were nearly unanimously positive about the device’s hardware, especially with the performance of the 41-megapixel camera. In contrast, those same reps were quick to point out that early sales were modest at best. When asked what was limiting consumer adoption of the 1020, reps commonly cited the $300 price target and consumer concern with switching over to a new OS as the biggest hurdles. We only found a handful of stores that sold out of the device on launch day, and in several cases, we were the first people to ask specifically about the 1020.
The $299.99 price (on contract) was a bad idea from the beginning. Especially since the Lumia 1020 is an AT&T-exclusive in the US. I really doubt there are too many users who’ll want to switch from another carrier to get it.
In other parts of the world, the new Lumia will probably be launched starting late August / early September. Overall, I don’t think the 1020 will have a significant role in helping Nokia ship more smartphones this quarter than in Q2 (when the company delivered 7.4 million units around the world).
