BlackBerry 9720 launching in the UK in September

Officially announced yesterday, the new BlackBerry 9720 will be released in the UK starting September. At least that’s what Carphone Warehouse is showing here.

Carphone doesn’t mention how much the 9720 will cost, but other British retailers do. Handtec has priced the new smartphone at £197.99, while Expansys says it will cost a bit less: only £179.99 (about €210, or $279).

As these prices suggest, the BlackBerry 9720 is by no means a high-end device. Its features include BlackBerry OS 7.1, full QWERTY keyboard, 2.8 inch display with 480 x 360 pixels, dedicated BBM key, HSPA, 512MB of RAM, 5MP rear camera, and a 1,450 mAh battery.

BlackBerry hopes to sell the 9720 not just to existing BB users, but also to “customers upgrading from a feature phone or entry-level Android or Windows Phone device.” Well, that will be hard, as those coming from Android usually switch to iOS or Windows Phone, while those who want to switch from WP go to Android, or iOS. But we can’t blame the Canadian company for trying.
