Samsung Hennessy W789 Android 4.1 flip phone with 3.3″ HVGA displays will cost $800 in China
Let’s play a little smartphone pricing game.
If I told you I have an Android phone with 3.3” 320×480 (HVGA) display, 5 megapixel camera, 1.2 GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, how much would you give me for it?
$50? $100? $150?
What if I told you it’s a dual SIM phone that works on both GSM and CDMA networks? +$50? And if it was a clamshell with two 3.3” HVGA screens? $100 more? Then, if it is really well built and feels like top of the line device? Would you give me $100 more?
I’m sorry, I am only up to $400, and I’m running out of the reasons to up the price of this device.
Samsung, on the other hand, is not.
Remember that long rumored Android clamshell- Samsung Hennessy SCH- W789? With the specs above? According to multiple Chinese sites, Sammy is positioning Hennessy as an uber high end smartphone, and is asking 4999 Yuan (~$800) for it. That’s actually more expensive than Galaxy S4.
I guess there’s a good reason Samsung bought the rights to use Hennessy name for this phone. French wines/liquors must have some huge attraction for well to do over there. After all, a simple threat of increased duties on French wines to China was enough for EU to suspend antitrust investigation against ZTE and Huawei.
There must be a lot of middle-class Chinese men who are ready to shell out a lowly $800 for a Hennessy phone, no matter what a crappy deal it is.
Samsung knows it’s true. After all, it’s just a small step down from $3000 they asked from the rich for a Jackie Chan clamshell they released last year. And must have done a pretty brisk business to go for round 2.
