Microsoft Surface Pro 2 details emerge. Surface 2 (former RT successor) and Surface Mini in the works too

Microsoft’s first try at making their own tablets was a huge failure, to the tune of 1 billion dollars lost. By they have got a lot of cash to burn, and are very persistent on the things they consider to be strategically important.

After all, over the last decade, Microsoft has lost billions on MSN/Bing, with very little to show for it. Yet they still persist. And tablets are even more important to long term future of the company.

So now Microsoft is ready for the round two, and has three new Surface tablets in the works. Surface Pro 2, Surface 2 (successor to Surface RT),  and Surface Mini.

Microsoft Surface Pro

No confirmed details on the latter two, except that Microsoft is working on them, but Neowin and Paul Thurrot from Windows Super Site have some info about the Surface Pro 2:

  • Pro 2 will look exactly the same as the old Surface Pro
  • will be powered by next generation Intel Haswell Core i5 CPU
  • will have improved battery life – from 5hrs for the old PRO to 7hrs for Pro 2
  • 4GB and 8GB RAM option
  • refined, integrated two position kickstand

And, of course, Surface PRO 2 will run the new Windows 8.1 OS.

Will that  be enough for Microsoft to break through in the tablet market? Who knows. Poor battery life of Surface Pro 2 was a major gripe customers had with the original Pro. The other problem was Windows 8 itself, and the lack of touch optimized apps. Windows 8.1 has made some improvements there, too.

Maybe that will be enough. If not, well, Microsoft is here to stay, still has some time and cash to burn. They also have some big plans for Windows 9, starting the design from clean slate, and merging Windows Phone and Windows RT OS.

And now that Microsoft bought Nokia, they also get the know-how of how to build some of the best mobile hardware in world. So even if they fail to break through in 2014, 2015 might be really interesting.

Sorry you feel that way. But, except for typo “By they have got …” with “by” instead of “but” .

    Could you be more specific?
