Philips W8568 surfaces in China as yet another Android flip phone
Samsung isn’t the only company investing in clamshell smartphones these days, it seems. Meet the Philips W8568. Yes, a flip phone. Running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It surfaced in China, with leaked specs attached too. Are people in Asia really this in love with this particular form factor? Or are mobile device companies simply running out of ideas, and, like the fashion industry, desperately look to the past for ‘inspiration’? Maybe we’ll never know.
Anyway, the Philips W8568 has a 4-inch 540×960 IPS touchscreen, an 8 MP camera, a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, support for 3G (but no LTE or anything fancy like that) and dual-SIM GSM/CDMA, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, microSD card support, and a 2,100 mAh battery that apparently provides enough juice for 13 hours of talk time and 9 hours of Web browsing.
The phone’s measurements are 123.5x63x18.8 mm, and it weighs 214 grams. So definitely not the smallest, thinnest, or lightest device around. As of now it’s unclear when the Philips W8568 will go on sale, or how much it will cost. With such specs it shouldn’t be too expensive, then again Samsung’s gotten us used to seeing clamshells like this severely overpriced. So who knows what will happen. We’ll keep you posted either way.
