Samsung: “We know that Galaxy Gear lacks something special”. Will hire UI/UX experts to make it cool

Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch is an interesting gadget. Its design could be better, but its functionality and ability to run third party apps puts it ahead of any competitor. Still, Galaxy Gear lacks that something, that could make it into a highly desired accessory not only among über geeks.  Especially at an astronomical $299 price.

What’s interesting, Samsung execs know this, and even aren’t afraid to admit it in public. At a press event after Galaxy Note/Gear combo launch in Korea, one Samsung official said this:

“We’ve acknowledged that our Gear lacks something special. With more investment for user interface and user experience, Samsung devices will be better in terms of customer satisfaction,”

And, according to him, Sammy will hire a bunch of experts “with proven knowledge in user interface and user experience” to make Gear special.

Samsung also defended the high price of Galaxy Gear, saying that it has to be expensive early on, to account for high R&D costs. Which means that as sales volumes increase, and costs are amortized among more devices, Samsung smart watch prices will go down, potentially making them a true mass market item.

Now it’s up those UI designers to get to work, and produce something really cool in Galaxy Gear 2.

Or, who knows, maybe by the time next generation Gear is ready, Apple will finally release its iWatch, cluing Samsung in about how its done…
