iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 will be announced on October 22. Apple crashes Nokia’s party

Remember Nokia? Yes, the Finnish phone maker bought by Microsoft. Well, it’s holding an event on October 22 in which it’s expected to unveil a total of six new devices.

Yet once again a competitor decides to crash its party. This time it isn’t Google – it’s Apple. And when Apple holds an event on the same day as you, you should know you’re doomed to be out of the spotlight. The tough luck for Nokia continues.

According to AllThingsD, a reliable source for these sorts of things, Apple is going to hold its iPad event on October 22. In it, the company should announce both the fifth-generation full size iPad as well as the second-generation iPad Mini.

The iPad 5 will borrow heavily from the design traits of the iPad Mini, coming with narrower bezels and probably an overall smaller size compared to its predecessors. It could also get its CPU bumped to a 64-bit capable A7 unit. Whether or not the iPad Mini 2 will come with a Retina Display is still up for debate.

Both tablets could incorporate the Touch ID fingerprint sensor in the Home button, just like the iPhone 5S. This has been rumored recently, but it’s also far from certainty at this point.

Fun fact: October 22 is also when the Microsoft Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets will become available. So here’s Apple crashing not one, but two parties with one stroke.

64 bit CPU, mini 2 retina and a fingerprint sensor. OMG, stop the presses.
I have worked in tech since the early ’80s. While I own apple products this amounts to nothing more than the bells and whistles Samsung introduced with the S4. It’s just not that noteworthy. While I would welcome a mini with retina, it’s not the be all/end all. Get serious folks and jump off ANY fanboy wagon.
